Dougie

During the Campbell Conference Final between Toronto and the L.A. Kings in 1993, i got so enraged i painted this as a tribute to Dougie and the team.

Toronto took a 3–2 series lead heading into the controversial Game 6 in With the game tied at 4-4 in overtime, L.A. Kings superstar #99 Wayne Gretzky high-sticked Gilmour in the face, cutting his chin open. Many thought that referee Kerry fraser should have called a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct on the play (generally given for high sticking penalties that result in a cut at that time; linesmen can also call penalties for stick infractions, or at least advise the referee that an infraction occurred). However, Gretzky was not penalized and went on to score the winning goal moments later, evening the series at 3–3. In Game 7 at Toronto, Gretzky scored three goals and added an assist to give the Kings another 5-4 win and the first  berth in the Stanley Cup Final in team history. Gretzky later called Game 7 of the 1993 Campbell Conference Finals the greatest game he had ever played.

Shaggy Retriever

Go get that duck lad!

This painting was done using a limited palette of three colors. The aim was to get the ripples in the water as the dog went to get the duck that was shot by his master.

i chose this cold palette to portray the bleak and cold feeling of the damp marsh as we waited near a perfect still lake for ducks to appear

Belize Dock

The dock at the hotel in belize

While on holiday to Belize in Central America i painted this while perched at the end of the dock near the hotel i was staying in.

I remember it was so hot and the sun so strong that i was literally burning up as i painted it.

Even tough i was at the onset of sun stroke, i pushed on, trying to capture enough detail that i could use this as a study for future work

While on holiday to Belize in Central America i painted this while perched at the end of the dock looking back towards shore near the hotel i was staying in.

It was also hot this day with an unforgiving sun.

I painted as long as could before turning into a california raisin trying to capture enough detail that i could use this as a study for future work

The view from Laurentian View Resort dock at cottage one looking toward Murphy's Bay

My father and mother discovered Laurentian View Resort while on an adventure with my uncle Tim Notten, his wife Harriet, my uncle Art van Leeuwen and his wife Anne.

Fortunate we were as kids as this became our destination for three weeks of sheer joy every summer.

As an adult i continued coming here for visula beauty and fabulous fishing.

This painting is the sunset from the dock at cottage one looking towards Murphy's Bay on the mighty Ottawa River. It was done with Acrylics and flourescent paint.

This is a detail from Laurentian View Resort - Cottage 1 Dock

The fishing here was incredible, the mighty Ottawa River teemed with fish as this stretch of water was blocked at two ends by rapids and dams preventing large boats access here unless trailered in. I embedded little fishes into the ripples of the water and waves to emphasize that

Cleaning the bounty of the catch

The fish cleaning house at Laurentian View Resort on the mighty Ottawa River was situated outside cottage six where our friend Bill Douglas from Dayton Ohio(in blue) would spend the summer. My father Tony van Leeuwen (in white) and Bill are in the cleaning house filetting the small mouth and walleye caught on their trip while Bill's boat (top right) is coming in with more to clean

Northern skies over Otter Slide Lake

Northern skies over Otter Slide Lake - original painting using acrylic by freelance cork artist, web site designer and developer

Aurora Borealis in the daytime?

One year while on a canoe trip through Algonquin i had encamped on the shores of Otter Slide Lake. That night while lazing by the warmth of the fire, i was treated to a visual display of literal heavenly delight. The night sky came alive with the wisps and explosions of the Aurora Borealis also known as the northern lights. They held me transfixed for hours as they frolicked liked ballerinas dancing in circles, expanding, shrinking and exploding into long shoots of wispy ghostly light.

The next day i painted this while looking east over the lake and their memory soon embedded itself into the sky as i painted.
